Brazilian Capoeira has found its way to Provo, Utah!
Capoeira [pronounced kap-oo-air-uh] is a unique Brazilian art form. Brazilian
Capoeira combines martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. The result is a unique,
interesting and entertaining style of martial art.
Capoeira may have developed in Brazil, but its history and influence comes primarly
from Africa. African slaves living on Brazilian plantations weren't allowed to openly
practice traditional forms of self-defense out of fear they might develop the skills
and confidence to escape slavery. These slaves disguised their training by combining
it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.
To the untrained plantation owners, the fluid ground movements, spinning kicks,
aerial acrobatics, clapping and singing were part of traditional, native African
ritual dances. Capoeira has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination
of martial arts, dance, acrobatics, and live music.
Capoeira students learn traditional Capoeira movements along with Brazilian history
and culture, Portuguese language, and traditional music. Capoeira's challenging
dance and acrobatic movements help students develop physically, emotionally, and
mentally. Capoeira students also learn to play traditional instruments and sing
Portuguese music. Students develop strength, reaction reflexes, self-confidence,
creativity and self-expression during improvised games. These same skills carry
over to other sports and make Capoeira students better all-around athletes.
Capoeira classes are fun, entertaining, and a great workout. You can't help but
